Type 1 diabetes, or diabetes, is a chronic disorder that limits the body’s ability to convert into energy from food. The body does not make enough insulin, a hormone produced by specialized beta cells in the pancreas. Insulin is very important because it controls how much sugar (glucose) cells absorb from the blood. People with diabetes have very high blood sugar, but not enough measure of sugar inside the body’s cells.
Type 1 diabetes can occur at any age. The disease is usually found in children, adolescents or young adults.
The prevalence of diabetes in men is higher than in women. The onset of the disease usually occurs between the ages of 12 and 15, with most cases diagnosed before the age of 30.
