Diabetes diet-How to divide the meal to achieve a good diabetes control or sugar control?
“Split your meal “,is a common advice you hear from many doctors, when you go for diabetes treatment. Even if they know what diabetic foods to eat, the common mistake people make is to split the breakfast, lunch or dinner into 2 parts ,say 2 idlis @9 am and 2 idlis @11 am… That is not how it works . spreading your meal means to split it into small portions of complex carbs interspersed with fillers (low carb foods).
5 MEAL PATTERN:
For example, if you take 2 dosas at 9 AM go for a fruit at 11 am, followed by a small lunch at 2 pm and then a filler like nuts at 5 pm and so on and so forth. Here the trick is to go for small fixed portions.
PROS: good for weight loss, keeps BMR high, keeps you full and dont feel hungry.
CONS: If the quantity is not planned or if not done right ,you might end up worsening your sugar levels. Difficult to follow for many, due to job nature
WHO CAN FOLLOW: people on fixed schedules e.g.. bankers, teachers
3 MEAL PATTERN:
Here the daily diet is split into 3 meals breakfast , lunch & dinner. Nothing other than tea or coffee in between.
PROS: simple to follow. No hassles.
CONS: Dinners might get delayed. Total energy consumed might be high, leading to weight gain, if food is not measured.
WHO CAN FOLLOW: Small store owners, office goers, housewives.
2 MEAL PATTERN:
Here the daily diet is split into a large mea, usually lunch ,at 11 AM in the morning, followed by a fruit in around 4 pm , and a moderate dinner at 7 PM
PROS: Very easy to follow, early dinners help in weight loss
CONS: Many people may feel hungry late at night and end up snacking , causing diabetes to worsen.
WHO CAN FOLLOW: Marketing people without set time . Accountants, Self employed people.
