In this video, let me tell you what is diabetes and prediabetes, how do doctors diagnose diabetes, and how do you suspect yourself of having diabetes based on some common symptoms.
We, doctors, diagnosed diabetes in 3 ways, First, if your blood sugar after an overnight 8-hour fasting level is more or equal to 126mg/dL (7mmol/L).
Second, is oral glucose tolerance test. If the level is more or equals to 200mg/dL (11.1mmol/L), Congratulations, u have diabetes. The last method and the easiest method is to measure your blood HbA1c levels without you fasting or drinking any sugary drink, and you’re considered a diabetic if the levels are more or equal to 6.5%. Hba1c is known as glycated hemoglobin, its blood sugar that is bounded to your red blood cells.
Prediabetes is when your blood glucose levels are too high, but not high enough to be called diabetes. The precise definition is when overnight fasting blood sugar levels range from 100 to 125 mg/dL (5.6 to 7.0 mmol/L) This is also known as impaired fasting glucose. Or, in a two-hour post-Oral glucose tolerance test, blood sugar levels range from 140 to 199 mg/dL (7.8 to 11.0 mmol/L), otherwise known as impaired glucose tolerance.
Classical symptoms of diabetes are the triad of polydipsia, polyuria, and polyphagia. Other common symptoms are weight loss or gain, fatigue, blurred vision, slow-healing wounds, frequent skin and fungal infections, darkening of the skin in areas of body creases like armpits or neck, commonly known as (acanthosis nigricans), tingling or numbness in the hands or feet.
