Deficient blood sugar levels during sleep are a major issue for diabetics. While we can typically detect the signs of imminent hypoglycemia during the day, we may sleep through them at night. This increases the risk of severe hypoglycemia and loss of consciousness dramatically. Many variables impact blood glucose stability when sleeping. For starters, the night is a result of the day. How intense it was, whether we did sports, ate, or drank booze.
Sleep deprivation raises the release of stress hormones, decreases the metabolic rate, and makes it difficult to maintain a healthy weight. People who do not get enough sleep are more likely to die from heart disease. Sleep deprivation reduces tissue sensitivity to insulin (insulin resistance), which is one of the reasons of diabetes development.
