Dehydration is defined as a state of negative fluid balance in the body. Or in simple words, loss of water from the body.
Young children are more susceptible to dehydration because they have a larger body water content, and their kidneys are still immature to handle water equilibrium.
There are 3 major types of dehydration.
Iso Atretic dehydration, where both sodium and water are lost equally. Hyper Atretic dehydration, where water is lost more than sodium. And hyponatremic dehydration, where sodium is lost from the body more than water.
There are many different causes for dehydration.
The commonest one is gastroenteritis, which may be associated with both vomiting and diarrhea.
Other causes of dehydration include the following.
Diabetic ketoacidosis.
Febrile illnesses.
Stomatitis, which may severely limit oral fluid intake.
Burns.
Intestinal obstruction.
Heat stroke.
Congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
Diabetes insipid us.
Thyrotoxicosis.
And cystic fibrosis.
Whatever the underlying cause, untreated dehydration will lead to irreversible shock and end organ damage.
Therefore, it is important to replace fluid as soon as dehydration is diagnosed.
Other complications may include intractable seizures, venous sinus thrombosis, and renal failure.
Signs of dehydration may include the following.
Reduced level of consciousness.
Delayed capillary refill time more than 2 seconds.
Dry, or cracked mucus membranes, including lips.
Decreased, or absent tears.
Increased heart rate.
Increased respiratory rate.
Low blood pressure.
Faint, or impalpable pulse.
Slow skin turgor.
Depressed, or sunken fontanelle in infants.
Sunken eyes.
And absent or reduced urine output.
