➡️If you need some extra help, I have a DKA study guide complete with the pathophysiology, key clinical manifestations, & nursing care for patients with DKA ➡️ www.nursingschool911.net
.
💉DKA is an acute metabolic emergency associated with Type I diabetes mellitus.
.
💉The etiology of DKA is usually an illness, like the flu or a stomach virus ➡️ illness stresses the body causing release of stress hormones ➡️ stress hormones elevate blood glucose ➡️ in type I diabetics, they cannot effectively use the excess glucose so their bodies switch to lipolysis for energy ➡️ breakdown of fat leads to free fatty acids ➡️ free fatty acids are eventually converted to ketoacids ➡️ DKA!
.
💉Two takeaways: Hyperglycemia & metabolic acidosis.
.
💉Patients will exhibit Kussmaul respirations, ketonuria, & nausea & vomiting.
.
💉Treatment of DKA involves administration of regular IV insulin, which forces potassium into the cell.
.
🍌HYPOKALEMIA is the most important killer of patients with DKA!!!
