Australian Medical Association NSW President Dr Michael Bonning discusses the government’s ban on compound chemists replicating Ozempic, a type two diabetes drug commonly used for weight loss.
“I think this has been the most pop culture driven drug that I think any of us have ever seen in clinical practice more so than any other medication,” he said.
“It is requested by patients with regards to weight loss with regards to, they saw something about it on a social media platform, or they saw the results in their favourite Hollywood celebrity.
“That has really distorted the market given that this is a drug that is on label used in Australia and around the world for the treatment of type two diabetes, weight loss is a secondary and off label use.”
