New figures from the office of national statistics ONS has estimated that just under 1 million people in the UK may have undiagnosed type 2 diabetes leading to a dysregulation in the balance between glucose and insulin in the body.
In Type 2 diabetes, the body becomes insulin resistant which means that the body struggles to clear excess glucose from the bloodstream.
The ONS estimates that around 7% of over 16’s have T2D, yet around 1/3 may be undiagnosed. This figure increases to 50% in the age 16-44 age group, meaning that the younger we are, the more likely it is to be undiagnosed u less you have another underlying health issue.
Undiagnosed T2D can increase our risk with a number of complications, such as obesity, inflammation, heart, disease, stroke, neurological problems, and visual impairment.
While poor diet and lifestyle can increase our risk of developing T2D, other factors, such as our genetics or ethnicity can also increase our risk.
it’s always better to be ahead of the game and understand if we are at risk. A simple marker in our blood called HBA1C is often a good starting point as this begins to elevate as we become insulin resistant (see Sundays post).
Reducing sugar, starches, and increasing fibre, lean, protein, and healthy fats in the diet can help to regulate blood sugar, and in some cases can even reverse T2D. However, from my experience in Clinic, some people still need helping hand alongside dietary and lifestyle change.
Prevention is always better than cure. Information to the study can be found here.
