Why do drugs have different names for different uses?
Dr. Charles Mok explains that drug companies give the same drug different names based on its uses. For example, semaglutide is called Ozempic for diabetes and Wegovy for weight loss. Tirzepatide is marketed as Mounjaro for diabetes.
This helps doctors know if a patient’s health insurance covers certain drugs. Most insurance plans cover diabetes medications but not weight loss treatments.
